Easter Weekend
Good Friday. Holy Saturday. Easter Sunday. Easter Monday.
For Christians, this is the holiest weekend of the year. Good Friday marks a day to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Holy Saturday, the last day of holy week, is a day of mourning and recognition that Jesus laid in his tomb. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus - He is risen! Easter Monday is a continuation of Eastertide celebrations. Good Friday is a statutory holiday throughout the country, where as Easter Monday is not, however, some organizations and companies observe both.
This is also the weekend we expect the Easter Bunny to bring cheer to our homes. This tradition, originally from Germany, had the critter judge whether children were naughty or nice, bringing Easter eggs to those who were good. Hares were once believed to be able to reproduce without loss of virginity, making them a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Easter eggs represent the empty tomb of Jesus. Today, people like to use this holiday weekend as a marker for the beginning of springtime festivities and typically is celebrated by feasting, worshiping, receiving gifts from the Easter Bunny, Easter egg hunts and spending time with family.
