  • Valentine's Day | Celebrationguide

Valentine's Day gives us the perfect opportunity to wear our heart on our sleeve and let the world know who we hold dearest in our hearts. This holiday is one of the longest standing traditions we still celebrate today. There were actually many noted saints named Valentine, but it has been told that one in particular went against the rule by secretly preforming marriage ceremonies for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Saint Valentine was also known as a healer, but was ultimately killed for spreading the news of the gospel on February 14, 269 and the Feast of Saint Valentine was acknowledged by the Pope, just over 200 years later, on the same day as a marker to honor martyred saints. Over time it became recognized as the traditional day of love, romance and following your heart. It wasn't until the 19th century that Cupid, the god of desire, erotic love, attraction & affection, became popularly associated with Valentine's Day. While more recognized as a day for couples and romantic lovers, Valentine’s Day has evolved into a day to show all the different and beautiful ways we love others. • Gift Guide | Celebrationguide

See our list of classic gift ideas for any occasion. Gift Guide Find inspiration to make the gifts you give thoughtful and personal. Host Gifts When you are invited into someone's home or to an event, it is always polite to bring a small gift for the host. It doesn't have to be anything over the top, just keep it sweet and simple. Always consider your host, the season, the celebration and the theme. Flowers or small plant - consider pet friendly options. Beverages - wine, beer, spirits, coffee, tea, whatever your host's choice of drink. If you are unsure, bring your favourite to introduce to them. Sweet treats - baked goods (homemade or store bought), candies or chocolates Add a card or sweet note to whatever you bring to say thank you, congratulations or simply commemorate whatever the special event is. Party Favours When you are the one hosting, think of what you can send home with others that reminds them of your celebration. Keep it small and practical. Sweet treat baggies or homemade goodies Personalized items: candles, matches, magnets, etc. Small flower arrangements or plants Craft up something more personal to your talents and theme Weddings Cash - Cash is king! Newlyweds love a cash gift. Whether they are moving into a new home, starting a family, going on a honeymoon or just doing what they are already doing, this is the gift they can save or invest in exactly what they want. Obviously, give what you can, being there should be more important than the amount you give, however, if you are able, our advice is to consider covering the cost of having you attend. You likely won't know exactly what they are paying per guest as it depends on their style of catering and other happenings but on average we look at $100/person. Registry - Check to see if they have a registry so you are ordering items they have picked themselves. Personalized / Monogrammed Items - Keep these neutral and practical (like hand towels, candles, cutting boards, etc.) Unless you know they will absolutely love it, try to avoid items that they would need to permanently display. Don't forget to include a card to share well wishes and any special marital advice. Valentine's Day For your love: A greeting card (store-bought or homemade - sappy or funny) to share your feelings Flowers - Classic colours of white, pink or red in their favourite form or in the ever popular cuts of roses and carnations (tip: carnations last longer!) Sweets - Mostly all candy types are sold in Valentine's packaging so pick their favourite or go with the classics (candy hearts, cinnamon hearts or a heart-shaped box of chocolates). Chocolate covered strawberries can be found in some grocery stores and bakeries, or they are just as easy to make yourself. For the kids: Valentines or candygrams for school Flowers from mom & dad Put a small themed basket together with a new outfit, a book, a small toy, a balloon and candy

  • Canada Day | Celebrationguide

See our traditional inspiration and create your guide for celebrating Canada Day! Canada Day A day to be patriotic, celebrate our beautiful country and do all things in Canadian fashion! Canadian Confederation - when the three "United Canadas" (Ontario & Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick) came together as a single dominion under The British Empire - happened on July 1, 1867. Originally celebrated simply to reflect confederation, then more officially as Dominion Day, the name was changed to Canada Day in 1982, the same year we were disconnected from the legal dependence of the Parliament of United Kingdom. While not all provinces and territories were initially involved, they were included as they formed to complete the amazing country we live in together today. Manitoba 1870, Northwest Territories 1870, British Columbia 1871, Prince Edward Island 1873, Yukon 1898, Alberta and Saskatchewan 1905, Newfoundland & Labrador 1949 and finally Nunavut 1999. It really is amazing how vastly different each of the provinces and territories are. Distinct backgrounds, traditions, landscapes, cuisine and more are separated by each invisible border line but it is so admirable that as all of it is put together, we create such a powerful force and are undeniably better united as one. As Canadians, we should stand proud as the kind, strong, hardworking people we are. • Thanksgiving | Celebrationguide

See our traditional inspiration and create your guide for celebrating Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving A day full of gratitude, loved ones and good food. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving the weekend of the second Monday in October. Traditionally, families will host a huge turkey feast, however, this holiday can be spent in other ways including gathering with friends for a "Friendsgiving" celebration. No matter how you spend it, this day gives each of us an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings in our lives. Canadian Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated since 1879, but the fixed date was not set until 1957 with the Governor General stating: "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the second Monday in October." A lot of American and Canadian traditions are similar for this holiday (yes, we have football too), only our celebrations have more of a European harvest festival flair. Whatever you call it, we all seem to celebrate this long weekend as the unofficial kickoff to Summer on the Monday that falls before the 25th of May. In our colder climate, this is typically a safe weekend to start gearing up for a season spent outdoors. Whether that means working in your garden, setting up your seasonal campsite or opening your cottage, we welcome it with open arms. The true meaning of why this holiday is observed is to honor the birth of Queen Victoria in 1819. Queen Victoria ruled from the age of 18 until her death at age 81. The longest reign of any of her predecessors (and until Queen Elizabeth II), which established the Victorian era. Under her ruling, Canada became a more democratic country and less dependent on Crown governing. She never did visit our great country, but her legacy is stamped and celebrated coast to coast. • Halloween | Celebrationguide

See our traditional inspiration and create your guide for celebrating Halloween! Halloween Time to get spooky! This holiday has been celebrated for centuries and is rooted in spirituality. All Hallows' Day (November 1st) is the Christian day for remembering the dead, including saints, or in other words, hallows; which brings us to channeling our belief in the supernatural the night before on "Hallows' Eve". Overtime, through different countries and traditions, we celebrate Halloween today by carving pumpkins, wearing costumes, trick or treating, watching horror films and many more paranormal themed activities. Needless to say, traditions have been altered through the years but do have some ties to the origin of this day. Jack-o'-lanterns were once carved from turnips or other root vegetables either representing spirits to frighten people or used to ward off evil spirits. In North America, carving pumpkins was already associated with the harvest season and naturally flowed into Halloween as it became a popular celebration. Wearing costumes and preforming door to door in exchange for food traces back to Scotland and Ireland with some threat of mischief if not welcomed - but did you know that the first record of today's world famous quote "trick or treat" actually came from Ontario in 1917?! Costumes which were once way more scary and way less extravagant, actually reflected the theme of the dead but have transfigured into really any theme you want. While some embrace the original spooky theme, others find inspiration in anything from their favourite cartoon character to their wildest fantasy, or whatever their choice mixed with blood and gore. And realistically, if you grew up in Canada, you likely have memory of wearing a winter coat over or under your costume, ruining the whole look. However you want to dress or celebrate, Halloween gives the excuse to let your freak flag fly without judgement. So, loosen up, eat all the candy and revel in the darkness the day has to bring. See our traditional inspiration and create your guide for celebrating the Christmas season! Christmas The most wonderful time of the year! There truly is something magical about the Christmas season. There are so many events to attend and things to do in preparation for the big day. It can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and the bustle then all of a sudden be overcome with a mental crash so we like to keep this guide handy throughout the month to help break things up and stay organized. There are a lot of traditions that come with the season and keeping your own personalized notes can help you from forgetting the important details that help bring the familiar enchanment for yourself and the 0nes you love. We keep one list for all things Christmas while noting that there are things to be categorized into early prep, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. December 24th marks Christmas Eve. Some are already celebrating with family events, some keep it more casual at home waiting and preparing for Santa to arrive, some are joining a church service. C hurches often hold evening or late night services because it is believed that the birth of Jesus took place at night. Nativity is preached and depicted by an artistic scene or play to remind everyone of the reason for the season. Matthew 1:18-2:23 and Luke 1:26-2:40 tell the story of the birth of Christ bringing light and hope into our world. If you are preparing for Santa Claus to arrive or for a family function, you may be spending your evening baking cookies, getting food ready for the next day, last minute gift wrapping, or cleaning the house if you are hosting. Remember to take a moment to relax and soak in the holiday cheer by having a casual night of appetizers and your favourite holiday beverage with Christmas movies or music in the background. If you have kids and/or travel ahead of you the next day, try your best to get some rest - Christmas is just one of those days that seems to be so long while also going by way too quickly after a lengthy few weeks of preparation and anticipation. Thee Christmas Day, December 25th, is typically spent with the ones you love most, opening gifts and feasting on delicious food. If you have kids, you are most likely to have a slow morning opening gifts before heading off to visit other family members. If you have multiple people to visit, try to work out a system that is fair for everybody. If you are hosting, try to be considerate of others. It is hard for couples with children, especially split families, to please everybody and be everywhere while still enjoying the holiday. So if they cannot make it or can only attend for a quick pop-in every year on one specific day, it may be time to pick another date or to lower your expectations. December 26th, Boxing Day, originally meant as a day for donating to those in need, has turned more into a day of packing away the mess and a day (or week) of after Christmas sales. Because a lot of people are still enjoying holiday gatherings, you may choose to "box away" Christmas decorations any day you'd like. Some like to have everything cleared before and some like to enjoy it all until the New Year arrives. Try to keep in mind the oringial reason this day was named throughout the entire season - if you are able to donate things you already own after receiving new for the holiays, great! It is also always appreciated to donate ahead so others can enjoy the magic with everybody else on Christmas Day. However you celebrate, keeping your faith and loved ones in the forefront of your mind can help keep the inevitable stress of the holidays at bay. Merry Christmas to all! Traditional Ways of Celebrating & What Inspires Us: THEME Nativity North Pole: Santa Claus, Gifts, Elves, Reindeer Sweet: Candy Canes, Ginerbread BEAUTY & FASHION Christmas colours and patterns - red, green, white, silver, gold, plaid, sparkles, velvet, or themed graphics / "ugly" sweaters , themed accessories, Santa hats DÉCOR What do you have in storage? Pick your favourites to watch throughout the season. Classics include: Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Watch a Chrsitmas special from your favourite show Any version of a "Yule Log" if you don't have a fireplace to create a cozy atmosphere while opening gifts Listen to your favourite Christmas playlist - personally, I like to keep two separate playlists for Christmas Eve and Day. Christmas Eve includes more songs about Santa Claus - getting us ready for the big guy to arrive that night. Christmas Day includes more faith-filled songs reminding us why we celebrate. FLOWERS Christmas colours - white, red, yellow or green filled with evergreen, pinecones and berries Popular Christmas flowers include: poinsettia, amaryllis, lilies, roses, Christmas cactus Please remember that not all flowers are pet friendly, such as: poinsettia, amaryllis and liles. FOOD & DRINK For Christmas Eve, we enjoy a simple night of appetizers before the big day feast - we like to mix it up each year but some of our favourites include: a charcuterie board, sausage rolls. pizza rolls. cheese ball or dips with crackers or chips. mozza sticks, jalapeno poppers. spring rolls, pigs in a blanket, veg & fruit trays, meatballs. If you are hosting or bringing a dish for the big day, start whatever prep you can. And don't forget milk, cookies and carrots for Santa and his reindeer. For Christmas Day, start the day with your favourite fruits and an easy breakfast casserole. Then onto the main meal later in the day - a classic roast (turkey, ham, beef) with your favourite versions of all the sides: potatoes, stuffing, vegetables, casseroles, dinner bread, gravy. Top it all off with a classic dessert like pie or cheesecake. Enjoy your favourite Christmas baked goods throughout the season. We like shortbread, gingerbread or sugar cookies, date squares, Rice Krispie sqaures, truffles. Sip on your favourite holiday beverages: hot cocoa, festive punch, mimosas, eggnog, wine, champagne, regular or special coffee, cider Because there is never enough sugar during the holidays, we keep a small dish of our favourite chocolates and sweet treats throughout the season. Some of our favourites include orange chocolate, mint chocolate, M&Ms, candy canes, Hershey Kisses. FUN Host or attend a Christmas party Get outside to enjoy some fresh air - go for a walk, skating, tobogganing, build a snowman or fort, make snowangels, have a bonfire Stay in and make a gingerbread house, bake cookies for Santa, watch Christmas movies There are always so many local holiday events happening no matter where you live in the weeks leading to Christmas. Go to or participate in a local parade or festival, v isit Santa Claus for photos with the kids, go for a drive to see the beautiful lights. Research the many organizations that help people who are in need of a Merry Christmas and consider donating your time or money if you are able. GIFTS & GREETINGS Prior to December: take family photos for Christmas cards and order cards (if you do custom prints), start your shopping list for gift ideas Beginning of December: mail / deliver cards, start shopping if you haven't already While gift giving is viewed as a major part of this holiday, remember you do not have to spend all of your money. Think of what you can create with your talents - whether that is crafting, baking, or whatever. There are many thoughtful gift ideas out there that don't cost a fortune. On the other hand, if you have kids, you of course feel the pressure and want the very best for them. Go for one "big" gift and try to not go too crazy with everything else. Don't forget stocking stuffers! They can be easily filled with chocolates, socks, beauty products, small tools & games, etc. If you feel like you are a terrible gift-giver, just remember it's the thought that counts. Think of what reminds you of that person or even something practical that they use everyday. Their favourite beverage of choice or sweet treat, a nice pair of socks, scratch tickets, gift cards, etc. We suggest avoiding Christmas themed gifts (unless you absolutely know they will love it); a person only wants so many holiday themed mugs tucked away to collect dust throughout the year. • Easter Weekend | Celebrationguide

See our traditional inspiration and create your guide for celebrating Easter Weekend. Easter Weekend Good Friday. Holy Saturday. Easter Sunday. Easter Monday. For Christians, this is the holiest weekend of the year. Good Friday marks a day to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Holy Saturday, the last day of holy week, is a day of mourning and recognition that Jesus laid in his tomb. Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus - He is risen! Easter Monday is a continuation of Eastertide celebrations. Good Friday is a statutory holiday throughout the country, where as Easter Monday is not, however, some organizations and companies observe both. This is also the weekend we expect the Easter Bunny to bring cheer to our homes. This tradition, originally from Germany, had the critter judge whether children were naughty or nice, bringing Easter eggs to those who were good. Hares were once believed to be able to reproduce without loss of virginity, making them a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Easter eggs represent the empty tomb of Jesus. Today, people like to use this holiday weekend as a marker for the beginning of springtime festivities and typically is celebrated by feasting, worshiping, receiving gifts from the Easter Bunny, Easter egg hunts and spending time with family.
